Materials we use

Pine wood

Where do the most beautiful pine forests grow? Obviously in Southern Estonia! The beautiful woods grow straight and lean pines that yield high-quality timber. This is what the Suwem furniture is made of. The timber is covered with water-based varnishes and mordants. The natural source of materials ensures the safety of Suwem products. The wood of the common pine is valuable commercial timber due to its good mechanical properties. Pine wood has an average resin content of 4.8% and ages well. Due to the nature of pine wood, it is common to see exposed knots in the wood turn yellow in the white boards over time.

Varnish

Varnish is used to protect timber from external forces. Suwem furniture is finished with aqueous acrylic varnish solution. This does not contain free formaldehydes and so they are not released into the atmosphere during the drying process. The varnish complies with the requirements of the EN71-3 standard.

Polyurethane foam

The flexible polyurethane foam or FPF is a soft and elastic foam where 90% of the volume is made of air. Due to this the FPF is human-friendly: an odorless and breathing material that does not cause sweating. The color of FPF will change over time due to exposure to light, but its technical characteristics will remain. There are many types of polyurethane foams and they differ from each other by softness, density, strength, elasticity and durability. Every type is good for a certain product. When it is sometimes claimed that FPF does not last, the product probably used unsuitable FPF (primarily due to its lower price). Actually the FPF lifespan can be up to ten years, subject to its usage, with the presumption that the FPF used is the most suitable for product due to its technical characteristics. Considering all of the above, one might say that this material suits everyone, including people with allergies. However, when buying a product containing FPF, it always pays to ask about the type of FPF used and whether it suits your needs.

Coir

A mattress made of coconut fiber or coir, treated with latex. Orthopedically suitable – clinical tests show that a flexible coir fiber structure that is 5 cm thick will support perfectly the children’s spine and thus prevent later back problems.

Ventilation – thanks to coir, air will move perfectly through the fibrous structure of the mattress. Absorption capacity – the moisture directed into coir will evaporate so the mattress will always be dry under the child. Usage – we recommend using a wooden slat base for a coir mattress bed to provide good air flow to the mattress. In case of an enclosed framework without air holes under the mattress, we suggest airing the mattress out once a week by putting it on its side (eg. when being outdoors with the child).

Fabrics

The covers for Suwem mattresses are sown of 100% cotton cloth. This fabric is great for letting in air; it’s soft and friendly to the skin. The fabrics correspond to the international Öko-Tex 100 certificate. They are produced in an environmentally-friendly way and do not jeopardize the user’s health.

Batting

Batting is a fluffy material that makes the mattress soft and cozy. Batting retains its initial form extremely well, lets in air and is odorless.

Cotton

Cotton is a breathable material that feels soft and comfortable next to the skin. Suwem uses this material to cover mattresses.
