How to furnish the nursery?

The nursery furniture must be capable of taking some knocks. Sometimes it’s a cave, a fortress or a trampoline and you can even fly to the Moon with it. That’s why it has to be not just beautiful, but also practical, strong, functional and durable. Round corners and a stable position help avoid injuries during the whirl of play. Shelves must be protected from sliding out of their nests. High chairs must be sufficiently strong and well-constructed to let the child climb into them independently. Watch for the “GS” markings in this case.

But take your time. Once you have bought a child’s bed and diaper-changing table, you can take it one step at a time. By choosing strong furniture that can “grow” with the child, both you and your child will receive the maximum enjoyment. But that’s not the only reason for choosing strong wooden furniture.

Durable and non-toxic

Wooden furniture is non-toxic and, depending on the timber type, it’s durable and easily repairable. Wood must be treated only with non-toxic varnishes, oil or wax (eg. beeswax) – even if you plan to do it yourself. Make sure the paint and varnish resists saliva and sweat, because kids love to place things in their mouth.

Thankfully many hazardous substances are banned in the EU. However, other substances are not even subject to contact limits. Formalin-based glue is used to produce compressed sawdust board and thus is found in many furniture objects. If one room contains a lot of such furniture, the concentration of safe contact amounts can easily exceed the limit in the room. One should also avoid plastic furniture or objects with plastic cover, because they might contain hazardous softeners.
